RE: FMT multiple crossings

Hi John,
I have flown to the USA from Mexico twice within this past year. Both times from different airports.
When going thru Mexican immigration at the airport, my FMT was taken back by the immigration agent.
Upon flying back to Mexico, I obtained a new FMT which was issued to me free of charge.

RE: Border Difficulties

As OkieGene posted, I have had problems crossing from USA to Canada during two different times. The first time my RV was searched for about three hours while Canadian guards attempted to find a non-existent pistol.
The second time I had the same problem Sun had because I live fulltime in my RV. As a result, I had given up trying to enter Canada. However, one of the readers of my blog contacted a Member of Canadian Parliament who personally took on my case with the border guards. After that intervention, I was able to enter Canada.
My suggestion is to give up on visiting Canada in your RV. It is not worth it for you deal with such nonsense. I no longer RV into Canada.

RE: Black tank dumping incident

In early 2003 I bought my RV. In Cordelia, California, not too far away from my home there is a Camping World store with a dump station and I went there to do my first dump.
After hooking up my dump hose, I opened up the black water valve. Immediately the clamp securing the 90° fitting came loose sending poo all over the parking lot.
Other RVers scrambled to move their rigs from the mess. I was soooooo embarrassed! Using the hose at the dump station, I cleaned up as best as I could. Wow!

RE: need small mexican town suggestions

I am living fulltime in Mexico now. Actually began to RV into Mexico in 2003, but only in the winter and spring time and only in Baja California.
In December 2007, I entered mainland Mexico for the first time in my RV. Traveled from Nogales, Sonora, all the way down the west coast of Mexico. Visited soooooo many cities and towns, and Mayan ruins too.
When I came to Guatemala, I traveled along the border heading east. Entered the Yucatan Peninsula. At the end of May, it got too hot and humid. So, I headed west into the Sierras (mountains) in order to find cooler temperatures.
My advice to you is to simply enter Mexico and travel along enjoying your journey. Try to Camp mostly in small pueblos. If you wish to check out my blog for clues, that is fine. There is a link at the bottom of this post.
My blog tells the daily story of my adventures in Mexico. There is a map on most pages, showing where I made my Nite Camp.
Good luck to you both! What a marvelous adventure you are beginning.

RE: Mexico fuel prices rising?

Pemex announced awhile back that they would raise the price of their gasoline to market rate by 2010. Bloomberg news on Pemex
Magna is around 7.37 pesos per liter here in Zacatecas. However, with the peso falling against the dollar about 20% over the last week, gasoline is a bargain for Americanos here in Mexico.

I seem to be safe too. Recently I've decided to fulltime in Mexico. The people here do not interfere with my nite camping. I am able to camp almost anywhere!
I love Mexico. :)

RE: Olymic Wave heater in an Outfitter Apex 8

I have been using an Olympic Wave6 catalytic heater for six years, and love it.
My suggestion: Do not mount your Wave3 in the wall. Mounting the Wave3 on the portable legs with a six foot hose is the only way to go.
A catalytic heater works best if it is close to where you are in your RV. The heater warms the walls of your RV and radiates heat back at you.
Here is a story that I wrote about my Wave6:

RE: gearing up for interior remodel/repair...cabinetry question

I worked for a five years as a cabinet maker. I built cabinets for my RVs cab-over area. You may read about it in:
Cab-Over Cabinet Project
I recommend constructing a face-frame cabinet with a 3/4" x 1" hardwood frame. Oak or something like that. I used 1/2" plywood birch veneer for the sides, top and bottom.
Do NOT use particle board. Plywood veneer is light and strong and the only way to go.
This is not a difficult cabinet project for an experienced person. However, it may be a bit daunting for the inexperienced. Shop around your area for a cabinetmaker in order to find out more about who is best to do your project.
The doors will likely be special ordered from a company that makes doors.
One last thing. If you are experienced in traveling in Mexico, I suggest going there and shopping for a carpenter to build your cabinets. You will save a fortune!

RE: advice on caulking

I used to recommend Eternabond, and still do. However, in February, 2007 I had my RV fiberglassed. Fiberglass is soooooo much better than anything else. The entire roof was removed and replaced with a fiberglass roof that is now joined in one piece with the sides, front and back. All of the side joints were removed and replaced with fiberglass.
In June of this year, I went thru a tropical storm in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico with no leaks. My old roof would have been leaking like crazy.
My fiberglass job was done in Baja California del Sur, Mexico. If you would like to follow along what was done, I recorded the fiberglass job in my blog beginning on February 13, 2007.

RE: What if you can't speak Spanish?

Hi Chris & Jonna,
Here is my little story. On August 3rd of this year I was involved in a minor traffic accident in the City of Putla, state of Oaxaca. A transito guy wanted money to avoid having my RV impounded until the court opened the next day (this incident happened on a Sunday}.
This transito guy flashed handcuffs, in order to intimidate me. And showing me those handcuffs was intimidating. No doubt about it. I paid him $10US and he went away.
However, I was faced with the choice of losing my RV to the impound for a day and being handcuffed OR paying $10US. I would do the same thing again, if confronted with the same situation.
I admire you both for standing tall for your ideals. For me, I choose my battles. And the morality of traffic officers in Mexico is not something that I give a hoot about.

RE: Thinking of fulltime RVing to stretch retirement funds

Fezziwig,
Before you buy a generator from Harbor Freight, I suggest that you listen to it run.
Also, I've found that it is necessary for me to run my 1KW Honda often during the rainy season.

RE: Thinking of fulltime RVing to stretch retirement funds

Tioga George here! :)
I do have three electric sources.
Solar electric
Engine alternator
Honda 1KW generator
Fezziwig. You have much, much too many questions about solar electric. My advice is to use professionals to help you, not try to figure this stuff out on your own.
Here are two companies that I recommend:
RV Solar Electric
Backwoods Solar Electric

RE: Tioga-less George in Israel

Hi Everybody!
I don't have MsTioga with me in Israel. However, I do have two very valuable Team Members. Little Mavicito my wonderful Nikon camera. And our newest Team Member, Ms. Viola a Sony VAIO laptop computer.
Living in Israel is very much like living in MsTioga in the USA and Mexico. We get up each morning and go out searching for adventure. Except instead of driving in MsTioga, we go across the road and get on an Egged Bus.
Pretty neat, huh? :)

RE: Any experience with Werker batteries?

I replaced the Exide batteries (written about in the posts above) after almost five years of service. I paid $47.50/each for my six Exide batteries, bought at Sam's Club in early 2003.
After shopping around for replacement batteries in late 2007, I bought six Crown Deep Cycle Batteries. I've been using these Crown batteries for awhile, and I feel that they are a much superior battery to the less expensive Exide. (Hold a charge much better, don't leak at all) I paid $108/each for the Crown (installed).
Here is a link to the story about my Crown batteries:

RE: Philosophical Question of the Day

Hi Tony and Karen,
This topic addresses the entire life's direction of every one of us and asks this question:
Am I going to run scared everyday of my life, or am I going to live courageously, without fear?
This question is sooooo powerful and sooooo deep, that you may just shrug it off when reading it. However, understanding this question completely, changes everything!
And I mean everything!
Going to the doctor. Where to make a Camp. Do I boondock? Eating in a tiny Mexican restaurant. Stopping to help somebody broken down on the road.
If I run scared from something, that something gets me every single day of my life. Take the "crime in Mexico" fear. If I run from that fear, these criminals that I have NEVER met, get me every single day.
Bye for now,
George

RE: Speaking Spanish

Just go to Mexico and don't worry about speaking Spanish or not speaking Spanish. Have a good time and attitude. That is all that you will ever need!
When you go into a restaurant or are shopping for something, somehow the people that you talk to find a way to communicate.
Bien viaje!

There is sooooooo much mis-information in this thread about catalytic heaters.
I believe that it is in the best interest of the RV community that this entire thread be removed from RV.NET.
